Peru, which is among the Top 20 Countries in the World according to Conde Nast Traveler, continues to open up its tourism offerings. A recap of new initiatives follows:
TOURISM
Peru receives the Safe Travels seal, the world’s first stamp related to safety and hygiene in tourism in the midst of Covid-19
Peru received from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) seal “Safe Travels”, the first stamp of safety and hygiene in the world, against Covid-19. A set of protocols were designed under the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to achieve this safety stamp. This seal also has the backing of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and more than 200 industry CEOs around the world.
 
HOTELS
Fairfield by Marriott, one of the 30 global brands of Marriott International, will now also be represented in Peru with the opening of the new Fairfield by Marriott Lima Miraflores, located in the main tourist district of Lima. The new hotel, in front of El Reducto Park, has 147 rooms with separate work and rest areas, two meeting rooms, a business center, convenience store and gym.
 
AIRLINES
Peru restarted passenger air transport internationally on October 5, as part of Phase 4 of the economic reactivation, which began on October 1. The first flights resumed include those to and from Guayaquil and Quito (Ecuador); La Paz and Santa Cruz (Bolivia); Bogota, Cali, and Medellin (Colombia); Panama (Panama); Asuncion (Paraguay); Montevideo (Uruguay); and Santiago (Chile).
 
ATTRACTIONS
The Ministry of Culture announced that tourist visits to archaeological sites in Cusco resumed on October 15. Since that day, tourists who comply with all biosafety measures will be allowed to visit the archaeological complexes of Sacsayhuaman, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, Moray, Pikillacta, and Tipon. The sites are allowed to open at 50% capacity and will comply with all the biosafety measures so that tourists can feel safe while visiting these places.
 
The initiative seeks to make Machu Picchu the first tourist destination in Peru and the world to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This study will be the starting point for making strategic decisions so that the carbon footprint of Machu Picchu can be progressively reduced by meeting the goal of 45% reduction in emissions by 2030 and 100% by 2050, following the guidelines of the climate agreement of Paris.
 
RANKINGS
Peru has been included in the “Top 20 Countries in the World” list of the Readers’ Choice Awards 2020 by prestigious U.S. magazine Condé Nast Traveler. Peru placed 14th in this category, which includes other emblematic destinations such as Italy, Sri Lanka, Portugal, and Japan.
 
Hotel Paracas, a Luxury Collection Resort, Paracas and Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba ranked 3rd and 4th, respectively, in the Top 25 Resorts in South America. The ranking included other Peruvian brands like Explora Valle Sagrado (11th), Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Valle Sagrado (15th), and Aranwa Paracas Resort & Spa (25th). Ten Peruvian hotels were among the Top 20 Hotels in South America. They include Aranwa Cusco Boutique Hotel (2nd), Inkaterra La Casona (5th), Titilaka (6th), Country Club Lima Hotel (8th), and Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness (9th).
The list also includes Hotel B (11th), Palacio del Inka, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Cusco (13th), JW Marriott El Convento Cusco (14th), Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel (17th), and Belmond Hotel Monasterio (18th). Belmond Andean Explorer (3rd), Inca Rail (6th) and Belmond Hiram Bingham (10th) stand out in the Top Trains category.
 
Colca Canyon —located in Caylloma Province in the region of Arequipa— has been selected in the 2020 Sustainable Destinations Top 100, recently revealed at the Global Green Destinations Days (GGDD).
 
The Inca trail has been named by Lonely Planet as one of the best treks in the world. It is a route of 43 kilometers through ancient Inca trails to Machu Picchu. The duration of the trek is 4 days and 3 nights. The brave hikers have the opportunity to appreciate the scenic beauty with Inca archaeological sites including the Wonder of the World.
