African safari and tour provider ET African Journeys will offer two departures of Celebrate South Africa During Black History Month, an eight day tour of Cape Town and Johannesburg, in February 2014. Departing from New York City on February 9th and February 16th, travelers on the tour learn about South Africa’s complex history with visits to museums and cultural sites, while also having the opportunity to explore some of the country’s stunning natural landscapes.

With Cape Town’s beautiful Southern Sun Waterfront Hotel serving as a base for the first four nights of the tour, travelers will enjoy daily sightseeing all around the city. A visit to Robben Island’s maximum security prison, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned from 1962-1982, gives tour-goers an understanding of the conditions of his incarceration. While in Cape Town, travelers will also ascend to the top of the magnificent Table Mountain by cable car to see the region’s unique silver trees and beautiful wild flowers. The Cape Town leg of the journey also includes a daytrip to 17,300-acre Cape Point Nature Reserve.

The tour next moves to Johannesburg, where travelers stay the next three nights at Crowne Plaza Johannesburg — The Rosebank. Spending day in the area known as Soweto, which played a pivotal role in the anti-apartheid struggle through the 1976 student uprisings.

At the Apartheid Museum, a series of 22 individual exhibition areas takes the visitor through a dramatic, emotional journey revealing the state-sanctioned system based on racial discrimination and the struggle of the majority to overthrow tyranny. A visit to Constitutional Hill punctuates the story of South Africa’s turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy.
